Stained glass, also known as art glass, has been a form of window and architectural decoration for buildings since before the 12th century in Europe. In fact, the oldest stained glass windows are dated back to the 10th century, and are found in Dom St. Maria, a cathedral in Augsburg, Germany. Other places such as libraries, universities, and castles in Germany, Italy, France, and Spain are noted for their large stained glass panels, stained glass designs, and beautifully glass-blown trinkets. Stained glass itself is considered very festive, colorful, and expressiveconveying a sense of romanticism and beauty, with an old-world charm. Each design tells a story; most have been of scriptural events, scenes, or people. Other themes include famous artwork, nature, and abstract art. Today, virtually every city in every country uses stained glass windows and accessories for their places of worship, businesses, community buildings, and homes. Because of its popularity, those interested in art and history would appreciate the various stained glass images exhibits in museums around the world.
