Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter that was born in 1853 in the Netherlands and died in 1890 as one of the most famous painters ever. Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings include some of the world’s best known, most popular, and most expensive pieces of artwork.

However, when people first think of Van Gogh, oftentimes they don’t think of his famous artwork but about how he cut off part of his left ear. He suffered from recurring bouts of a mental illness, though the cause of the illness is still unknown.

At the age of 27 in 1880 he began his painting career. Generally he is referred to and see as a Post-Impressionist painter. During the last 10 years of his life he created over 2000 pieces of artwork (which include about 900 paintings and about 1100 sketches and drawings).

However, most of the best known work of Van Gogh was produced in the final 2 years of his life, and he actually created around 90 paintings in the final 2 months of his life.

However, on July 27, 1890, a very depressed Van Gogh shot himself in the chest. He did not realize he was tragically wounded though, and actually returned to his room and died 2 days later in his bed. The great painter Vincent Van Gogh was dead at the age of 37.
